SATA SSDs vs PCIe SSDs with Linus

What makes PCIe SSDs better than traditional SATA-based SSDs?

Linus explains the benefits of PCIe SSDs. The PCIe bus’s wider bandwidth (1GB/s per lane) can access your system storage faster than SATA 3.0 (600MB /s), which can help increase loading time for programs, decrease boot time, increase overall system responsiveness, smoother previewing of heavy i/o content in real time — and much more.

No matter what kind of storage solution you need for your system, HyperX offers SSDs that will fit both your needs and your budget, offering both SATA and PCIe based storage. HyperX Savage SATA SSD reaches speeds of 560MB/s read and 530MB/s write. HyperX Predator PCIe SSD reaches speeds of 1400MB/s read and 1000MB/s write.

  1. I have to say if I ever want something explained in a timely and consistant manner Linus always seems to hook a playa up

edit: That being said do these pci express ssd's require a full 16 lane slot to function at said speeds??

  2. I have a question: Do these M.2 to PCIe adapter cards interface directly with the computer's onboard BIOS to become bootable disks, or do they have an Option ROM that has to initialize separately before the computer can boot?

  3. ok rather than searching for another hour::
when I use M.2 port B – the motherboard disables SATA ports 5 and 6 on my Motherboard. (B450 Aorus Pro Wifi) and M.2 port A disables SATA ports 1 and 2. I presume all 4 will be disabled if I use both M.2 ports…. ???
If I use a PCIe M.2 NVMe adapter, in stead of using the M.2 on the motherboard, will it still use up those lanes and disable the SATA ports??

  4. Why can't the SSD fit directly into the PCIe slot? Why does it have to be mounted on another adapter, since it already has its own connection slot?

  5. My sata wd green 240gb ssd is plugged into cd port (with some aftermarket parts) is working at the same speed with my sisters pcie 256 gb kingston ssd. So what about that?

  6. I think all ssd should be connected though the same type of slot that your video card is since that is A much faster slot

  7. It’s incredible, that we basically tripled the SSD speed in just 3 years. With current high speed storage topping out at 3.2GB/s…

  8. And here, in 2018, it's 3500MB/s read drives

  9. Hey Kingston, why are your RAM Modules significantly expensiver versus most brands? On Newegg for example.

  10. PCIE is the fastest interface of your computer. So we need a motherboard that has pcie memory modules, pcie hard drives, and pcie graphics cards.I mean what is the point of sata and usb when pcie does it all faster.

  11. Description says 1GB/s per pcie lane… It's more like 20GB/s and the 4.0 specification coming out soon will double that.
